The Kents Bank Totem Pole found by myself Dawn Hilton-McAlister 2015

Here is the Totem Pole 'found object' that 'I found' whilst reading about a 'human leg bone' that had also been found in the area of Kent's Bank Cave area in Cumbria. (Lancashire) depending on which local person you asked!

The Kent's Bank CAVE Leg bone had been found and taken to Liverpool John Moores University. They have carbon-dated the leg bone to over 10,000 years old making it the oldest Northerner in the North of England.

I found this a witty comment as I already knew about the 'RED LADY OF PAVILAND that had been found in Wales in 1823.
The Red Lady turned out to be The Red Man of Paviland that has now actually been carbon-dated to 33,000 years old.
Maybe our oldest 'NORTHERNER LEG BONE' had a genetic connection down the road in wales?
haha I can hear all my Welsh Grannie's chuckling as they sleep in the Welsh marshlands amongst the sweet smells of springtime.

There were many more bones found in the cave at Kents Bank, Grange-over-sands and taken to the Dock Museum in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. (Lancashire)
Axes and blood axes FROM THE CONQUEST were found along with lynx cat bones in the cave and the lynx became extinct 1,800 years ago.

Was the lynx mixed with the Manx Cat's I wonder?

Well, I had to go and take a look my curiosity was getting the better of me. I had already spent four years backward and forwards visiting, researching & recording the megalithic tombs, Viking tombs and hogback stone at Heysham just across the bay.
I just knew that I was being drawn to Kents bank for a reason, plus the fact that at Heysham there are such huge megalithic stones that no one seems to mention.
Are WE that ignorant that we can't see our own prehistoric marks and share their stone records?

Folk flock to Stonehenge and gather with their children in rituals? Why don't they know of such places?
People can spend a lifetime in ignorance and not know what is around their own backyards.

When I drove to Kent's bank I immediately felt a connection with the entire area. It was a peaceful calming feeling like a hug from your mother.

I haven't felt that even from the town that I was born in or any place that I have ever lived, thinking back I once felt that in a place called Nelson in the South Island of New Zealand when I was twelve years old.

On arrival at Kent's bank cave:
I noticed the Totem Pole but also a beautiful Stone Ice Age WARRIOR, beautiful White Eagle stone with a phallus(erect penis)  a segment ARC stone and an alignment SQUARE set stone.
 see images below.

I was stunned and amazed at what I had found.
(I was at the time studying a fine art degree at University and sculpture techniques.)
I showed my tutor who had a Ph.D. in sculpture and she just dismissed me & told me not to bother with such things, (I was breathing like a dragon at this point, my breath being sucked out of my core) later she would teach me to tie wool to a wall and call it sculpture.

I just found myself in a daze as I realized that my ancestral mothers had been weavers weaving their clan ancestral tartans and paths AND THIS WOMAN just wanted me to go back to weaving down the same path as my mothers.

I had gone to university to learn to be a sculptor, to try and place changes in my working practice from a painter to grasping the construction & deconstruction techniques with clay, not wool and realized I was in the wrong building.
I had painted for 28 years at this point, I wanted a fresh way of looking.
I felt trapped & cooked up feeling like a 'battery hen' I had to get out of this prison, this 'LIONS DEN', MY creative senses were being destroyed and I would NEVER allow that to happen for anyone.
I had to leave the Institution as fast as I joined it & as I WAS just getting frustrated being with folk that was happy just being battery hens.
I had to get back outside and be FREE.

I have tried to get people interested in these stones and other stones that I have found but most folk would just dismiss my finds and can't see how I see them or maybe they can and choose not to pursue the facts.
When I think back now some of these folk have been professors of archaeology, churchmen of various religions and each one either laughed in my face or looked away in embarrassment.
Is that how being institutionalized makes you behave?

After all, I'm only an 'Artist' what do I  know about such things?
It would have not only taken an artist 'EYE', a leg, hand & a creative mind to create such a 'THING' but the creative 'HUMAN' spirit also.
But who, what and why?
These questions still need some answering or what are WE all doing it for?

And may I add all those things 'TO FIND' and SEE, to record and show to those who of us that may be interested in such wonderful creative things that early artists created.

These things belong to us all and we deserve to be shown them to figure out our connection to the 'found object' to be objective, to be critical and question, to learn from our past so we can LOOK to the future.

Maybe I read too much into the things I look at but I just find it all so natural and it's my second sight.
It's my god given gift, my natural gift.

It's my natural way that I am seeing and I don't think I see any different than anyone else see's, it's just a case of LOOKING!

The Kents Bank 'ICE AGE WARRIOR'  'found object' by Dawn Hilton-McAlister 2015

So OK I'll admit my stone warrior look's like something out of a PICASSO studio, his right arm raises reaching for a 'DISC' object and his left arm reaches for an arrow/spear,  his wee  'willy' winkie shows that he is indeed a male, but look at him, his eyes have that twinkle, that spark that 'constructed placed stone' that can only confirm that it is indeed a man-made object. 'THING' object.

“To find is the thing.”― Pablo Picasso

Kent's bank cave is all limestone with odd interesting bits of various stone clusters, a geologists dream if you're into such things. My THING is to just look at the stone from a sculptural viewpoint and try and see how the prehistoric man/WOMAN/child saw art and to try and study their techniques.

LOOKING IS EASY, IT'S LIKE PLAYING SNAP OR SPOT THE DIFFERENCE.
You just train yourself to look at things that may appear to be something.

Look for the basic shapes in the stone, angles, triangles, squares, and curves. It doesn't matter where you are on the globe. Basic instinct's are the same, we just have to look.

So when walking past a rock please take time to not only to LOOK but see if there are any features that stand out to you.

If you can, record the date & location.
Write a little about it and how it made you feel?
What caught your eye about it?
You don't need to be an artist, an archaeologist or have a Ph.D. in the arts to see, feel and sense a connection to something like a rock, all you need is to use your basic instinct.

The great huge Moai heads at Easter Island, for example, you can't miss them and the Moai had a saying "Think like a rock be like a rock".
Moai set in the hillside at Rano Raraku

Here is the 'WHITE EAGLE' phallus stone that I also found at Kent's Bank Cave & also in front of the eagle is what I can only describe as a worked segment stone with lines.

As you can or cannot see the WHITE EAGLE is facing the 'half moon' or segment stone and in front of that is a 'square-ish oblong' marked stone.
Are these 'grave markers? Or just simply placed stones that man had worked & played with?
Was he trying to work something out?
Distance? quarrying? Astronomical observations? Tribal path? Sacred path? spirit guideline or was he simply leaving you a safe path to cross the water's edge in case you became stuck?
What was he trying to do with the stones?
Some of the stones seem very advanced with sharp edges almost cubist yet the arc segment just has strip lines,
Was it used for net making or some form of anchor point?
Was the land here even coastal back then or open farmland or even forests?

So many questions but I'm afraid only science or TIME TEAM could find the answers out.

These stones sit directly on the beach shore and the FOOT of the cave along the sea line.
                        'THE LINE OF FREEDOM'
I have noticed a local area called 'HALF MOON BAY' at Heysham just down over the bay, I wonder if there was a connection?
Heysham has some wonderful megalithic huge structures that no one talk's about & an unusual Viking Hog Back stone.
If these things were in the South they would be treated like 'GOLD DUST' but in the 'NORTH' we are just like Cuckoo's bleating away at the cave walls awaiting for the Sunshine to give us 'LIGHT'!

If I am right about the Iceage Warrior at Kent's Bank then surely there must be others that we may have missed? Maybe there could be a missing TRIBE of them along the seashores, the FREEDOM LINE?

I would advise anyone to make sure to check the tides and to go at low tide as the sea can fill up the area VERY fast and the mud is like sinking sand Don't get your leg trapped like I did. haha

Recorded by Dawn Hilton-McAlister 2018

hmm looking at stone legs is like looking at the clouds over the Irish Sea, the stone leg is pulling my leg help me I'm sinking!

I felt a very peaceful spiritual connection when I was there, a tremendous calmness and connection to the 'ICEMAN',

I FELT LIKE MY GRANDFATHER WAS HOLDING MY HAND, it was an overwhelming feeling of connection.

I would recommend anyone take a visit to there and try the energies out with dowsing rods.

I found rock's that looked like huge fossilized dragon head imagine that on your dinner plate with chips & mushy peas.

Locals tend to send you on a wild goose chase when you're asking for directions to the area. I don't think satnav would work.
The small villages are tiny and typical old world cottages built for folk no more than 4ft in height.
Such beautiful quaint little backwater places.

The shops are basic and typical fast plastic sandwiches food corner shops.

Take a picnic!

You can see that the 'YUPPIE' types have moved in and are mixing well with the natives.

It's a small single track lane that takes you down to a small nature reserve and carpark.
Once out of the car just simply walk straight on to the mudflat beach cove and FEEL that energy, just enjoy the walk and see what you can see.

How to get there and information

Personally, I noticed a lot more as well but I'll leave that up to you to see!

We know the man has been about here from at least 12,000 years along this area but I can't help but think about the 33,000-year-old Lady Paviland in Wales that has turned out to be a MALE after all that.
Are We missing something more? Are we LOOKING through the wrong eyes? Should we be looking through the eyes of a sculptor? or just naturally looking?

Here is an image of the cave from directly below looking up, the cave opening is just below the top.

The cave opening is just above the top green lush line.
If your thinking of climbing it wear good shoes. I didn't as I'm a bit too old for that silly nonsense now!

Here you have a perspective snap, I would say the coastal walk along here you can times it X 3 in size but it becomes wetter and hazardous towards the point of the head.
This walk is easy and takes about 15 minutes. The nature trail is a little on an incline and it's up to you how far you wish to climb.
The ICE AGE WARRIOR can be found in that 'STONE CLUSTER' to the left of the image.

Thank you for viewing. Why not take a trip to Kent's Bank Cave area there are loads to SEE!

Here is the Link to the museum at Barrow-In-Furness!
You would need at least 2/3 days to visit both places and really take in the feel and research information.
Barrow is some miles up the road and not an easy place to navigate around.
